President Donald Trump’s administration has been bedeviled by shadowy forces known collectively as the “deep state.” This week, President Trump has signaled that he is itching for a fight with that deep state.
According to The Daily Caller, after two men with connections to Fusion GPS, the sleazy “opposition research” firm that released the now widely discredited “Trump Dossier,” plead the Fifth in front of Congress, President Trump went to the Justice Department and demanded that they reveal who paid for the dossier.
The dossier, which was originally released to the public by Buzzfeed, claims that Russian intelligence agents are blackmailing Donald Trump to do their bidding. The “dirt” that they have on him apparently comes from a Moscow business trip where Trump slept with Russian prostitutes.
Before being denounced as “fake news,” Arizona Senator John McCain flew an aide out to London in order to acquire the document from former MI6 agent Christopher Steele, who is now in the paid service of Fusion GPS.
McCain provided a early version of Steele’s dossier to former FBI Director James Comey. Comey then used this document to start the process of subpoenaing certain members of the Trump administration about their links to Russia and the Russian government.
It appears that Robert Mueller is still subpoenaing people based on this dossier as well.
While testifying before a federal court, BuzzFeed reporter Ken Bensinger said that he saw the dossier for the first time in December when his source allowed him to take photographs of it.
Bensinger has yet to name his source(s).
Fusion GPS co-founders Peter Fritsch and Thomas Catan both refused to reveal their sources before Congress as well.
This latter incident led President Trump to write on Twitter, “Officials behind the now discredited “Dossier” plead the Fifth. Justice Department and/or FBI should immediately release who paid for it.”
Besides President Trump, the lawyers for Aleksej Gubarev, a Russian tech executive, also want answers about the dossier.
Gubarev is named in the dossier as an FSB (Russia’s intelligence agency) agent who used his power to infiltrate the Democrat Party and the Democratic National Committee. Gubarev disputes these claims, and is currently suing Fusion GPS.
In order to increase pressure on Fusion GPS, the House Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed TD Bank to disclose the identities of Fusion’s clients.
Fusion has countered these actions by saying that the House is violating their First Amendment rights. The company claims that it is a media outlet, and is therefore protected under “Freedom of the Press.”
At this point in the investigation, we know Fusion GPS was working for a Hillary Clinton ally when Steele began compiling the dossier. Some Republican lawmakers believe that it was the Clinton campaign itself that gave an untold amount of money to Fusion in order to create the dossier.
President Trump’s desire to reveal Fusion GPS’ backers is understandable, especially in light of the recent news reports about the true extent of the Clinton family’s dealings with Russia between 2009 and 2011. If the Justice Department can reveal the true face of Fusion GPS, then the entire Russian probe pyramid may collapse on itself.
